Parents and Students,
Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching and we have a ton of fun and exciting activities planned that include Dress Down Days and service projects. A separate email will be sent next week outlining what's planned for each day and how we will celebrate our Catholic faith.
Personally, I'm very much looking forward to celebrating Catholic Schools Week with all of the students, staff and families of St. Charles. After being away from Catholic schools for the past two years, this year means more to me than ever. This is a true celebration of what education should look like and feel like and it is happening every day at St. Charles! Catholic Schools Week was created to celebrate the value of Catholic education and ultimately, reminds us why we choose Catholic education ... to learn from the teachings of the greatest teacher of all, Jesus, and to learn to walk in His footsteps. Please join us in this wonderful celebration of our faith!
First Holy Reconciliation: Congratulations to all of the 2nd Graders in Mrs. Halvorson and Ms. Ellenbecker's classes who made their first Holy Reconciliation last weekend. Celebrating this sacrament for this first time brings new life into the hearts of our children and prepares them for a lifetime of powerful discussions with our Lord. We are proud of our students and excited for them as they took a step in creating a stronger bond with Jesus and growing in their faith.
Rosary Prayer Group: We will gather next Wednesday, Jan. 23rd in the Life Teen Cafe to pray for our school and the students of St. Charles. Please join us at 8:30 am!
Re-enrollment: Enrollment is growing and going very well for the 2019-2020 School Year! Our classrooms are robust and we are excited for new families already joining St. Charles. If you are planning to re-enroll, but haven=E2=80=99t done so yet, please refer to the email you received from TADs on Dec. 20. Email me if you need me to resend the enrollment instructions. Thank you for the privilege of serving you and your family and allowing us the opportunity to educate your child(ren) in 2019-2020!
Open House at St. Charles Parish School Jan. 27 from 10 am to 1 pm: Encourage family and friends interested in our Catholic school with strong academic expectations and Catholic identity to tour our parish and school. We would love to meet them. All teachers will be on campus and families will tour guests around the campus. Read more here. If you and/or your family would like to help with Open House please email Advancement Officer Christina Holmes. We're always in need of families who can welcome any visitors on that day.
Field Trip Permission Slips: A mainstay of our Catholic Schools Week activities is attending Mass at a church other than St. Charles. It gives our students a view of very traditional churches outside of Lake Country. This year our students in 4K through 8th Grade travel to St. Josaphat Basilica in Milwaukee. Students will travel by bus to the church. After Mass students in 4K through 4th Grade return to St. Charles to watch a movie in the afternoon. Students in 5th through 8th Grade will go to Sussex Bowl. If your child is in 4K through 4th Grade please print this permission slip. If your child is in 5th through 8th Grade please print this permission slip. There is a small field trip fee for students going bowling. All permission slips are due Thursday, Jan. 24. More details to come but students are asked to wear khaki pants and red shirts to the Mass because we take an all-school photo.
Book Fair: Our Book Fair begins Wednesday, Jan. 23rd and runs through Monday, Jan. 28th. We are excited to use a new vendor this year, Follett Books, as we feel their selections are a better fit for St. Charles. Students will have the opportunity to preview the different books and purchase books many times during the sale period. To learn more about the Book Fair click here. And we still need volunteers! Happy New Year!
I wanted to share some information about upcoming events and resources. REDgen West is partnering with Hamilton Connects to bring Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg to our area to present his research on the 7 C=E2=80=99s of building resilience in youth, based on his book "Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Kids Roots and Wings." The event will take place on Thursday, Feb 28 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at the Hamilton Fine Arts Center in Sussex. For more information and to reserve tickets, see here. "Parenting Kids with Love and Logic=E2=80=9D is another great parenting resource. If you are interested in attending a Love & Logic class there are some upcoming options in our area. Hamilton Connects (Sussex) is offering a 4-part class beginning on Tuesday, Jan 29. Parents Place (Waukesha) has a 4- part program beginning Tuesday, Feb 19.
I=E2=80=99m currently reading "Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love with Expectations and Protection with Trust" by Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg. He calls his approach "lighthouse parenting=E2=80=9D. Dr. Ginsburg states, "We should be lighthouses for our children - beacons of light on a stable shoreline from which they can safety navigate the world. We must make certain they don=E2=80=99t crash against the rocks but trust they have the capacity to learn to ride the waves on their own.=E2=80=9D
The book dives into 2 of the toughest questions for parents:

How do I give my child the unconditional love needed to thrive while also holding him to the high expectations needed for success?

How do I protect my child while letting her learn life=E2=80=99s lessons?
Dr. Ginsburg goes on to state that "If we can strike the right balance while answering these questions, we will raise resilient children who are poised to thrive through good and challenging times." St. Charles Open House -- Spread The Word: Postcards announcing the Open House at St. Charles have been mailed to households across Lake Country this week. If you know someone who's interested in Catholic school for their kids please pass along the postcard or tell them to check out the website. Also listen to Relevant Radio (1640 am) throughout the day for the next couple of weeks to hear ads promoting our Open House from Principal Garvey! The ads are a first for St. Charles -- let us know what you think!
Book Fair Bake Sale: Treats and goodies will be available during lunch on Thursday, Jan. 24 to celebrate the Book Fair. The Bake Sale is hosted by the 7th Grade Class. Items will be priced between 50 cents and $1 and there will be nut-free treats available and store-packaged cookies and candy for children with nut allergies.
Mardi Gras Auction: The annual Auction and Dinner is rapidly approaching. Have you bought your tickets for the March 9 event? Reserve your seats here. Also a few reminders:
* Auction Item Wish List: The Auction Committee is still looking for donations and the deadline is Friday, Feb. 15. Take a look at what's needed here. Also, the donation form is here.
* Gift Card Raffle: Did you receive some gift cards over the holidays that you will not use? You can donate them to the Gift Card Raffle! Please put them in an envelope marked Auction Gift Card Raffle and drop off in the School Office. For questions please contact Auction Co-Chairs Wendy Crisci and Elizabeth Andekian.
Dress Down Passes Now On Sale: Dress Down Passes for the second semester are now on sale. Print the form and turn it into the School Office and Dress Down passes for your children will be sent home in February. Five passes are $10 and the cost will be billed to your TADs account. The sale ends Thursday, Jan. 31 so return your forms soon.
Basketball Games At St. Charles: More great basketball heading our way this weekend with four games on Saturday, Jan. 19. If you have time stop in for an hour and root for the home team.

Country Hoedown Dance-a-Thon: The Second Annual Crusader Challenge Dance-a-Thon is set for Thursday, Jan. 31 during Catholic Schools Week. Information was sent home this week with your child. The theme this year is Country Hoedown as students will dance in the gym for about 40 minutes. Students can ask family members and friends for pledges based on the number of minutes they dance or sponsors can donate a specific amount. Learn more here. Knights of Columbus Contest Winners: A rowdy round of applause to the 13 St. Charles Parish School students and one student in St.Charles Parish Religious Formation who placed in the Knights of Columbus 2018 Christmas Poster Contest.
Posters were judged based on the expression of the true meaning of Christmas, originality and artistic quality. More than 177 entries were received and St. Charles won the program participation award.

Chess Team Awards: Congratulations to the St. Charles Chess Team for their wins last weekend at a chess tournament held at St. Charles.
St. Charles students playing in 5K through 6th Grade unrated placed 2nd in the tournament. Students playing in 5K through 6th Grade rated placed 3rd in the tournament. The Chess Team is coached by Chris Seaman.
Students who participated in the tournament were George Anello, Andrew Collins, Gabe Collins, Ava Herkowski, Alistair Holmes, Owen Krier, Camden Pierret, Christian Pierret, Noah Raab and Bobby Walsh.
Volunteers Needed In Many Areas: The second half of the year offers many volunteer opportunities for our families to fulfill service hours. We need help just about everywhere -- in the library, health room, lunchroom and much more. Please help! View the entire Sign Up Genius here

St. Charles Auction and Dinner: There are many spots to be filled! We need your help selling raffle tickets on weekend Masses Feb. 23 & 24 and March 2 & 3, set up the morning of the auction and assistance during the auction. Working the auction is a great way to meet other parents.
St. Charles Parish and School Spirit Wear Sale: The Catholic Schools Week Spirit Wear Sale takes place Friday, Jan. 25 through Monday, Feb. 4. This is your opportunity to buy St. Charles Parish and School attire for the spring and summer months. Don't miss out! Learn more here.

Book Fair Opens Wednesday, Jan. 23: Mark your calendars for the Follett Book Fair which starts Wednesday, Jan. 23 and runs through Monday, Jan. 28. We're excited to roll out this Book Fair with a new company. Your kids will have plenty of chances to shop during school and on the weekend after all Masses:
Wednesday, Jan. 23 from 6 pm to 8 pm during religious education classes
Thursday and Friday, Jan. 24 & 25 from 8:30 am to 4 pm
Saturday, Jan. 26 and Sunday, Jan. 27 after all Masses
Monday, Jan. 28 from 11:30 am to 1 pm and 3:30 pm to 4 pm

Chili Cook-off Set For Feb. 2: The 10th Annual Chili Cook-off goes down on Saturday, Feb. 2 after the 5 pm Mass. This is a good-natured competition with several different categories and new this year is a soup category. Don't like chili but want to participate? Then bring soup. Get all the details here. This is a fun night with lots of laughs and full bellies.
