THE WEEKLY RUNDOWN
Sept. 20, 2018

he Weekly Rundown

Mission Statement: St. Charles Parish School in Hartland, Wisconsin nourishes and grows a vibrant Catholic community committed to innovation, responsiveness and compassion as it prepares and challenges students in their intellectual, spiritual and moral lives.

A note from Guidance Counselor Stephanie Delmore

Dear Families,

I am really enjoying being back in the classrooms with the students. I spent time with all students in 5-8 grade last week doing team-building activities. I=E2=80=99m meeting with friends in 3K & 4K to talk about identifying feelings. Time with 5K-4th grade students is being spent now reviewing a program called Kelso=E2=80=99s Choices. Kelso is a frog who learns to identify what is a =E2=80=9Csmall problem=E2=80=9D that he can solve himself using strategies such as sharing, taking turns, talking it out, etc. Kelso directs us that we take our =E2=80=9Cbig=E2=80=9D problems to a trusted adult. Classroom teachers and playground supervisors are helping to reinforce this program.

We are less than 3 weeks away from the start of our 6-week parenting program: Parent Wellness Circles. This program is curriculum-based and focuses on understanding our parenting style and how to take care of ourselves in heart, mind, soul and strength in order to be the best parents we can be.

This program will be held at St. Charles Parish School but is open to the public as community outreach through REDgen. Please contact me at sdelmore@stcharleshartland.org if you wish to register.

To learn more about REDgen click here or visit the website at REDgen.org. If you are interested in becoming involved in supporting youth mental health in our area, please consider attending the initial community interest meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 2 for the newly formed REDgen West Chapter. (Meeting details here.)

In case you missed it last week I compiled some very helpful resources to talk to your family about the highly sensitive topic of suicide. Please click here to read more.

Blessings,
Stephanie Delmore

 Announcements to keep in mind:

Power School Passwords Sent Home Wednesday: Passwords and login information for Power School, the online portal that allows parents to check student grades, assignments, absences, etc., were sent home Wednesday. Please make sure you look for this paper in your child's backpack.

Soles Walk For Catholic Education: Raise your hand if your child have an old Soles Walk t-shirt. Come on, get those hands up! That retired Soles Walk shirt just got your child a Dress Down Day. Wear any of the five previous Soles Walk t-shirts from past years on Friday with jeans or other approved pants. So start digging in those drawers and find that t-shirt. Only students with a Soles Walk shirt are eligible to dress down.

Also, the 1st winner of the $100 + Prize Raffle will be drawn during morning announcements on Friday. Students of families donating $100 or more to the Soles Walk will be entered. Please remember all donations stay at St. Charles for tuition assistance.

Coming next week the ever-popular Penny Wars returns! Start bringing in your silver and pennies on Wednesday, Sept. 26. This is a terrific competition and the kids love it!

Take a look at all fun planned around the Soles Walk here.  All families should have received a Soles Walk information sheet and envelope at the end of last week. Please check your child's backpack if you haven't seen it.

And finally, Free Soles Walk for Catholic Education registration ends Tuesday, Sept. 25! Last year, 222 St. Charles supporters for Catholic education joined together to walk. You can help us reach our goal of 300 walkers this year by registering now!

There are only a few more days of FREE registration, so visit www.catholicschoolswalk.org
under =E2=80=9CSt. Charles =E2=80=93 Hartland Crusaders=E2=80=9D and join our team now! The walk raises awareness
about our great Catholic schools and all pledge money raised at St. Charles stays here for tuition
assistance.

We're also collecting all types and sizes of gently-used shoes for the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul. Rubber band pairs together and leave them in the boxes set up at church and school.
Any questions, contact St. Charles=E2=80=99 Walk Captain Jenni Burns at jenniburns@yahoo.com.

Book Orders: Scholastic book orders were recently sent home with students in classes up to 5th Grade. Please note as you make your book order selections that some reading material may not align with the values and Catholic teachings of St. Charles Parish School. Most titles are appropriate and help build home and classroom libraries. As a parent, you make that final decision. Some good resources to learn more about the books you potentially will purchase are commonsensemedia.org, goodreads.com, along with other Catholic family websites. Please vet the books your children want to order before you place the order.

Change Of Plan Procedures: Please make plans for pick up with your child each morning before dropping him or her to school and please stick to those plans. It's confusing to students and teachers when plans change during the day and often times the School Office is busy and there is no way to give the messages to students. If there is an emergency and plans change, parents must call the School Office by 12 pm in order to get the message to students. Please remember that students perform better during the day when there is a set, unchanged schedule.

Dress Down Passes: Purchase five Dress Down passes for $10 and let your kids have days off from wearing their uniform. Print the form here and turn it into the School Office. The $10 fee will be applied to your TADS account. Students must use all their passes by mid-January 2019. Dress Down passes can't be used on Mass days. Dress Down Passes will be distributed to families later this month.

Room Parents Needed: Thank you for your quick response to the call out for Room Parents. We still have openings in grades 5 and 7. These are fun and fairly easy volunteer jobs that allow parents to act as a liaison between the classroom teacher and parents. The Room Parents also help plan classroom parties and other events. Their help is critical to teachers and this is a great way to fulfill volunteer hours. To sign up visit this page.

Homework Club Begins Oct. 1: Homework Club starts at 3:25 pm and ends at 4:15 pm on most Mondays. Middle school students work with students in lower grades on homework or educational games. It's free and most kids love it. To enroll click here. For middle school students who want to help click here.

Birthday Book Club: Make your child's birthday extra special by donating a book to the school library in his or her honor. Learn more here. It's a great program and many students take part.

Pumpkin Patch Outing: The October Jesus and Me get-together is a trip to Ebert's Greenhouse Village Pumpkin Farm in Ixonia. All preschoolers are invited to this event on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 1 pm to 2 pm. Learn more here.

General Mills Box Tops For Education Fundraiser: The Box Tops drive is a big fundraiser for the school and we receive money for each Box Top sent to General Mills. Last year our school earned nearly $1,400 from Box Tops. It's very easy to take part.

1. Buy your favorite General Mills foods and products and make sure to cut the Box Top symbol on the box.

2. Drop off the Box Tops in the Parish Office or place them in the drop slot outside of the Parish Office if you come to church during hours when the office is closed. There are expiration dates for each Box Top so don't hang onto them too long. If the Box Top is expired we won't receive money.

3. We're in the midst of a big push for Box Tops as the next big deadline is the end of October.

So start saving those Box Tops and drop them off with your child's teacher or in the School Office. Thank you for your help and happy clipping!

Volunteer Opportunities: Sign ups for a variety of volunteer jobs for the 2018-2019 School Year are now available. Please take a few minutes to peruse all the opportunities by visiting this link. * Calling All 3rd through 8th Grade Cheerleaders: The St. Charles cheerleading season will start soon. We'd love to have your daughter join us!  The following are frequently asked questions:

  2. You may play basketball and cheer. We will make sure that there are few/if any conflicts. Basketball would take priority over cheer.
  3. You are welcome to cheer with us -- even if you have never cheered before!
  4. We are still working on practice times but hopefully will know shortly.

Safeguarding Training: Any individual that is in contact with students needs to complete Safeguarding God=E2=80=99s Children training and this pertains to ALL employees and volunteers at St. Charles Parish School.

This is a one-time training and offered at various locations in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee throughout the year. Please click here for upcoming trainings and to register.
