From Principal Anderson
It has been a very exciting week at St. Charles. While it is the end of the year, our staff continues to plan exciting lessons, activities and field trips for our students.
In the STEM Lab our 5th Grade students are finishing up their unit project by programming a robot through the specific tasks of moving and collecting blocks. Our kindergarten students enjoy watching caterpillars become butterflies before their eyes. Third Grade students participated in the annual Little House on the Prairie Day complete with bucket lunches and time period appropriate clothing. On Wednesday, the Fourth Grade class visited Madison and many of the state capitol sites.
On Thursday, the Advanced Band students will share their talents with a community of retired religious sisters while playing their prepared solos. On Friday, our 8th Graders will attend their final retreat as students as they travel to St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee. Their retreat will include time spent with both Fr. Behling and Fr. Ken who will give them a behind-the-scenes tour of the seminary.
And, trust me when I tell you, there are many more exciting activities planned by our amazing staff to keep the students engaged to the end of the school year.
This week the School Commission and I were excited to welcome Mr. Dan Garvey, incoming principal, to the meeting. Mr. Garvey was introduced to the School Commission and plans are well-underway for his transition. I will begin my new position at Catholic Memorial High School on July 1. Mr. Garvey and I will have time throughout the month of June to work together as he gets to know the St. Charles community. There are plans for him to officially meet the school staff later this month and he will spend at day with me as we visit classrooms, spend time in the lunchroom, walk the playground during recess duty and meet with other members of the parish and school staff. It has been my pleasure getting to know Mr. Garvey and I look forward to introducing him to the St. Charles community.
Also as a continued member of the Western Waukesha Deanery and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee I look forward to collaborating with Mr. Garvey and other local elementary schools in my new role. I am confident that St. Charles is in great hands and I'm grateful to School Commission Chair, Mr. Jon Ingrisano, and the search committee for their time and attention to this very important matter. School families and parishioners will have a chance to meet Mr. Garvey at Masses during the weekend of June 2nd & 3rd.
A couple of other important messages regarding the end of the school year.
First, applications for financial aid for the 2018-2019 School Year are now available. All families desiring some tuition assistance must file an application through TADS before Friday, June 15, 2018. As part of my end-of-year duties I will completes tuition agreements and award financial aid. It is imperative that any family desiring assistance fill out the application. Fee waivers are available. Please contact me at landerson@stcharleshartland.org for assistance, questions or concerns.
And secondly, good news! Due to a surplus in the Wisconsin state budget, Gov. Scott Walker has approved a $100 tax credit per child for parents. The applications are now available online (https://childtaxrebate.wi.gov/_/). Visit the site for more information, but as parents you will receive $100 per child who are your dependents under the age of 18 as of Dec. 31, 2017. Please take advantage of this tax credit.
Thank you for your continued support of your children at St. Charles. Enjoy these last weeks and finish strong!
In gratitude,
Mrs. Anderson

St. Charles Honored By St. Anthony's In Milwaukee
St. Anthony School in Milwaukee, our sister parish through our Outreach Services Team at St. Charles, recently honored our parish for our volunteer efforts with their school. St. Charles was named the Parish Volunteer Group of the Year. A great many people were involved in our parish to have received this award. View a picture of Terri Blazek, chair of the Outreach Services Team, receiving the award here.
Thank you to all who have donated prom dresses or gifts during the Circle of Love Christmas gift program. A number of needy families have received Christmas presents through their generosity over the past three years. Outreach Services raised funds by grilling at the Piggly Wiggly Brat Shack to provide coats for St. Anthony School students.
In addition, St. Anthony students received Buddy Ball teddy bears as a result of the successful St. Charles school promotion. St. Vincent de Paul has also helped financially and with surplus food donations to St. Anthony's food pantry.
Future plans for the partnership between St. Anthony's and St. Charles include a First Holy Communion dress collection drive and combined student activities between both schools. Again thank you to all involved in these efforts. If you would like to become more involved in our volunteer efforts with St. Anthony School or our other outreach activities, please feel free to contact Terri Blazek at 262-367-7608 for more information.

Keep Collecting General Mills Box Tops
Let's end the year right and bring in a record number of General Mills Box Tops. Bring them in by Thursday, May 31 and we will mail them off in June, well before the deadline. Keep your eyes out for the Box Tops and then clip them and send them to the School Office or give them to your child's teacher. St. Charles typically earns a lot of money from this fundraiser. Thank you in advance for your help!
