First Reconciliation and Communion

First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion

The sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion are central parts of the Catholic faith! We carefully prepare for and even celebrate the first time a child receives these beautiful Sacraments, but it’s important to remember that the word “first” implies that you don’t receive these Sacraments only once.

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we acknowledge our sins before God and the Church, express our sorrow in a meaningful way, make some reparation for what we have done, and resolve to do better in the future. In return, we receive the forgiveness of Christ and his Church and God’s abundant grace and mercy. No wonder people tend to walk out of the Sacrament with a smile on their face!

Catholics are required to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year, but it is recommended (and generally a lot easier!) to receive this Sacrament on a monthly basis.

Starting with our First Holy Communion, we are privileged to receive the real and physical presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist every time we go to Mass, provided that our hearts and souls are prepared.

The Eucharist is not just a symbol. It is the actual Body and Blood of Jesus, which still retains the appearance, taste and smell of bread and wine. The Eucharist is a beautiful gift from God. Through it we receive God’s grace, have minor sins forgiven, grow more like Him and are more united to each other.

Catholics are required to go to Mass every Sunday (or Saturday evening) and every Holy Day of Obligation.

Children generally receive these beautiful Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in 2nd Grade.

First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in Parish Program:

Children typically prepare for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion over the course of two years, generally beginning in 1st Grade.

This preparation takes place within our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program when possible. There may be some mandatory retreat nights in addition to the regular class times. Good attendance is required during these two years of preparation. No child will be compelled to receive the sacraments until he/she is ready.

First Sacraments Preparation for Children with Special Needs:

If your child has an IEP or a 504 at school, we would like to meet with you and your child before placing them in a particular class. Most children do well within the regular class because Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is both hands-on and child-paced. Sometimes we will have them work with a tutor to accommodate their needs.

First Sacraments Preparation for Children in 3rd-5th Grade:

If your child is starting preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in 3rd – 5th Grade, they will work with a tutor or a small class to get ready.

Parent Requirements for First Sacraments:

1. At least one parent needs to attend the Sacramental Preparation meeting(s). Those dates will be communicated in the early Fall.

2. The parish will need a copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate early in the year as well as some other info to help keep you connected to everything that’s happening and to complete our records at the end of the year.

3. Complete the online registration form, which will be emailed after the Parent Meeting in October.

4. Families should attend the Blessing of First Communicants in November, where children receive a special blessing and the opportunity to connect with a prayer partner during their time of preparation.

First Reconciliation is usually celebrated in March and First Holy Communion in April or May. A First Communion rehearsal during the week before First Communion is mandatory for the First Communicant and at least one parent.

The Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion as well as all parent meetings, rehearsals and Sacramental requirements and records are organized and implemented by our Children’s Discipleship staff. Details will be communicated to you throughout the First Sacraments year. Please prioritize these important dates and be especially attentive and responsive to all communications from Shelly Buchan, Children’s Discipleship Lead (sbuchan@stcharleshartland.org). It may be helpful to add her email address to your contact list.
